In this week’s Dos & Don’ts we feature a vaccine testimonial from Exelon Utilities CEO Calvin Butler, information on the J&J vaccine, why sharing food is a don’t and more.

Shot Talk with Calvin

Calvin Butler, Exelon Utilities CEO, admits that he was a little hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Do read on to learn how he overcame his doubts.

J&J Vaccine on Hold

You may be aware that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), out of an abundance of caution, have recommended that use of the J&J vaccine be paused until they conduct a review of the data. This is related to six cases of a rare and dangerous blood clot occurring in women aged 18 to 48 within two weeks of vaccination.

The pause is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.

Do know that these blood clots, while very serious and requiring different treatment than typical blood clots, are extremely rare, occurring only six times out of the 6.8 million J&J shots administered to date. Because the safety of our employees is of utmost importance, we also will be putting on hold using the J&J vaccine for any of our employee vaccination events, which will be rescheduled or conducted with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

If you have received the J&J shot and have concerns, please contact your doctor or other health care provider.

Don’t let this pause deter you from getting vaccinated. This pause on the J&J vaccine is precautionary and does not impact the safety of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Check out the Vax Scene site for more information.

Don’t Share Food, Share Recognition Instead!

When is a doughnut dangerous? When it’s shared during a pandemic. Although it’s usually fun to enjoy food with your colleagues, while COVID-19 remains a threat, the virus can be spread by sharing pizza, doughnuts, chips and guac, and other communal foods. Don’t bring food into work for colleagues to share. Instead, do consider recognizing your colleagues using Achievers, our online recognition platform. Social recognitions are free, unlimited and provide a COVID-safe way of saying “thank you” as often as you’d like!

Don’t Let April Showers Wash Away Volunteering

Despite the rain, many of you are getting outside to volunteer with family, friends and co-workers in honor of National Volunteer Month at Exelon. Do feel free to schedule a small outdoor volunteer event, so long as you adhere to Exelon guidelines on wearing masks and social distancing, along with any local COVID-19 restrictions. Staying indoors? Do review independent and virtual volunteer events by visiting Powering Communities.
